Die! Freeze! Rise! / 2023 year

The project consists of photographs, collages, a sculptural installation, and video art. Its central idea revolves around the search for spiritual salvation in turbulent and challenging times. As a visual and conceptual framework, I draw upon the tradition of the Theatre of the Absurd.

The Theatre of the Absurd emerged as a response to an era marked by total war, death camps, weapons of mass destruction, and terror—in short, under the sign of the apocalypse. Absurdism transformed its protagonist into a puppet: the absurd hero is always an object rather than an agent of will.

The playfulness of the game and the brutality of horror merge together; death becomes a game, while life turns into a grotesque nightmare. The title of the work refers to this same game. “Die, ” commands the leader, and all participants freeze in awkward, absurd poses. “Rise again, ” and they come back to life. These absurd poses resemble the positions we ourselves find ourselves in today.

In speaking about spiritual salvation, I turn to Christian symbolism, incorporating references to recognizable icons and apocalyptic imagery throughout the work. By photographing my children, I create a playful, theatrical form of action. Together, we stage our own play—one that asks no questions, where the characters accept the meaninglessness of their existence as a given. It is precisely this acceptance that grants them the possibility of happiness.
